Beer Belly – Not Just Found in Men Anymore!
__________________________________________________________
Binge-Drinking gives women more chance of a beer belly than steady consumption.
That’s right ladies! The commonly known term the…”beer belly” is not only found in men. In fact, more and more women are experiencing what is now labeled the…”beer belly woman” or for a better name…”wine glass figure” named really because increase bellies in women are often as a result of increased consumption of wine when out socialising, and entertaining clients. The plain truth behind both the “Beer Belly” and “Wine Glass Figure” is that there is some TRUTH and some MYTH behind those terms.
Both are simply associated with Abdominal obesity, colloquially known as belly fat or clinically as central obesity, is the accumulation of visceral fat resulting in an increase in waist size. Several colloquial terms used to refer to central obesity, and to people who have it, refer to beer or wine drinking. However, there is little scientific evidence that beer drinkers are more prone to abdominal obesity, despite it being known colloquially as “beer belly”, “beer gut”, or “beer pot”. One of the few studies conducted on the subject did not find that beer drinkers are more prone to abdominal obesity than nondrinkers or drinkers of wine or spirits.”

All women know by now they should avoid high-calorie drinks, like fancy cocktails, especially if they go out with their friends on a regular basis. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that plain alcohol, like wine, is inoffensive if ingested in large quantities, neither as regards health nor weight. A new study cited by the Daily Mail reveals that women are most exposed to the risk of gaining weight more so from binge drinking rather than just from drinking alcohol alone.
Here’s why…The weight gain, however, has little to do with the type of alcoholic beverage of choice or the period of time over which a woman binge drinks, the findings of the study indicate. It’s the pattern that leads to the extra pounds in the sense that the same amount of alcohol consumed over short periods of time (say, an entire bottle of wine in the course of a single evening) helps the stomach expand. [key detail --->]This, in turn, leads to feeling the need to eat more, which, of course, is translated in weight gain, researchers at the University College London say.
For the first time, researchers believe they have identified the link between drinking and abdominal obesity, which helps trigger diabetes and heart disease. They blame it on the pattern of drinking, when large amounts of alcohol are consumed in a session instead of being spread over a period of time. In fact, the classic beer belly is a bit of a myth because men who drink beer regularly – around two pints a day – barely see a change in their girth.” the Mail says, citing the study that involved an estimated 30,000 people and span from 2002 to 2005.
In men who binge drink, the increase in size is of only two inches in waist. Women, on the other hand, are more prone to gaining more pounds if they indulge in too much alcohol: about four inches in waist. But women are also more at risk from drinking because their body mass is comparatively small and is not able to absorb the alcohol ingested, researchers warn. Still, in both men and women, it’s not the volume that leads to the weight gain, but the pattern.

Fat Beer Belly - author Sue Lynn Tan
A big misconception with having a fat beer belly is that it is caused by drinking too much alcohol. The fact is that the roll of tummy fat is caused by consuming too much food. All the excess calories and carbohydrates get turned into fat and is deposited as fat around the tummy.
Another misconception of losing that belly fat is just concentrating on abdominal exercises. Yes, ab workouts do play an important part in achieving a fantastic six pack abs. The only thing is, you have to burn off the belly fat before working on toning the abs.
The only real and healthy option is to turn to diet and exercise. A good low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet will assist you greatly in weight-loss. Carbohydrates turn into sugar and fat when left unused by your body. Coupled with exercise, protein restores the muscle which you might burn on your way to losing that belly fat.
Six small meals a day will chase away any hunger pains which might linger from your change in diet. The frequency of the meals will keep your stomach fuller and working for longer, which will prevent the urge to snack. If you cannot help but much on something, try a handful of unsalted almonds, hard boiled egg whites or a personal can of tuna in brine. These are healthy snacks which will not add unnecessary fat into your diet.
All these fresh and healthy food needs to be complemented with some exercise to get that belly fat reduction going. The word “exercise” has been misjudged and misconstrued for the longest time. It does not mean you have to feel a burning pain during and after you work out. In fact, if you do, it probably means you have over-strained yourself.
Exercise can be as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. A walk to the neighbourhood shop for some milk is also exercise. 30 minutes a day of constant movement is all you need to get the ball rolling—or in this case, get the belly fat burning. It is well documented that any form of exercise will start those metabolism rates increasing. This means we burn fat faster when we exercise. This does not mean that we can eat more just because we are burning more.

There is a little trick I learned during winter when it is too miserable to get out of the house and you just don’t feel like doing anything. When you are cooking, or just putting together something to eat, march on the spot. This movement gets your legs moving and blood pumping, which means increased metabolism rates! When watching the television, I do some abs exercises like flexing and clenching. These are also great abdominal workouts to strengthen abs. Leg lifts, yoga and pilates are fantastic workouts to do at home which will both strengthen your muscles and lose that belly fat.
It is obvious getting rid of the fat beer belly is not all that difficult. A small change in your lifestyle can result in a drastic change in your health and appearance.
