homework.. systematic sampling?
okay so it says..
A machine in a factory produces bottles with screw caps. every 20th bottle is produced with a cap that doesnt seal the bottle. a factory worker notices one faulty bottle cap and decides to take a systematic sample of bottles in order to asses the scale of the problem. explain the effect of sampling
a) every 20th bottle, beggining at bottle number 20
b) every 5th bottle, begginging at bottle number 5
c) every 5th bottle, begginging at bottle number 3
:S im really confused! i dont understand.. can anyone help me??
a) if he takes every 20th bottle (starting with bottle 20 - which is faulty) and tests it then every bottle he chooses will be faulty.
b) if he takes every 5th bottle (starting with bottle 5) then he chooses bottle numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30,... and so on. So every 4th bottle will be faulty.
c) If he chooses every 5th bottle (starting at bottle 3) then he chooses bottle numbers 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, 33, 38,... and so on. So none of the bottles he chooses will be faulty.
